SOTD: Adam Ant – Strip

My thoughts
Released on the Adam Ant album Strip in 1983.

Anyone who knows the name Adam Ant probably thinks of one of two songs: Goody Two Shoes or Desperate but Not Serious.  Neither song is on the Strip album.  The two singles were Strip and Puss and Boots ( both videos were minor hits on MTV back when MTV played music videos)

I was a big Adam Ant fan. The Adam and the Ants album “Kings of the Wild Frontier” is still one of my favorites, though I can’t remember the last time I played it.

Musically, Strip was as far from Kings as possible. The distorted guitars whaling with feedback on Physical, the rebel themed anthems of Don’t Be Square Be There or Ant Invasion, the punk influence throughout Kings of the Wild Frontier were replaced by the stripped down romantic styled pop lust for the Strip album.

How does it fit into my life? The Adam Ant tour to support the Strip album was my first concert. The show included songs from all of his albums to that point: Dirk Wears White Sox, Kings of the Wild Frontier, Prince Charming, Friend or Foe, and Strip. A mélange of styles and influences that did not always fit well together. It’s was a bit odd to hear Ant Invasion, Stand and Deliver and Goody Two Shoes, Strip in the same show. Still, great concert.

The opening act for the Philadelphia concert was the Romantics, who were enjoying the success of their single “Talking In Your Sleep”. Ironically, their single was higher in the charts than the Adam Ant single at the time. Both are now considered one-hit wonders. The Romantics for Talking In Your Sleep and Adam Ant for Goody Two Shoes from Friend or Foe.

At the time, I thought Adam Ant made some of the most creative and interesting videos. Now….well.

Lyrics
It’s at times like this the great heaven knows
That we wish we had not so many clothes
So let’s loosen up with a playful tease
Like all lovers did through the centuries

We’re just following ancient history
If I strip for you will you strip for me?
We’re just following ancient history
If I strip for you will you strip for me?
Uh-huh-huh

When it gets so hot, the end of the day
You may find your clothes getting in the way
If a pretty dress hides your true desire
Fold it nice and slow, throw it on the fire

We’re just following ancient history
If I strip for you will you strip for me?
We’re just following ancient history
If I strip for you will you strip for me?
Uh-huh-huh

We don’t need to see what the butler saw
Or a mirrored room with a mirrored floor
All those sneaky looks gazing down on you
Are no substitute for our rendezvous

We’re just following ancient history
If I strip for you will you strip for me?
We’re just following ancient history
If I strip for you will you strip for me?
Uh-huh-huh

It’s at times like this the great heaven knows
That we wish we had not so many clothes
So let’s loosen up with a playful tease
Like all lovers did through the centuries

If you think it’s cheap or a bit risqué
Please don’t say a word I’ll just slip away
I am not a man who believes in lies
Like an octopus with big x-ray eyes

Don’t freeze up girl, you’re looking quite a sight
Be generous, I want it all tonight!

We’re just following ancient history
If I strip for you will you strip for me?
We’re just following ancient history
If I strip for you will you strip for me?
